Honduras Mission Team 2001

Team Meeting Minutes for April 29, 2001

Honduras Mission 2001 Team Members and support members met Sunday (April 29, 2001) at Grace Presbyterian Church in the Family Room.  Charlie Barker provided an introduction of the new team leaders, which included Joe & Greta Miller and Jerry & Jeannie Patee.  Charlie indicated, since the last meeting, that a medical person (Jeannie Patee) and the Team Leader (Joe Miller) have been found.  The meeting was turned over to Joe Miller and he opened with prayer and handed out the meeting agenda, critical milestone dates and a current roster.  Those three items are attached. (NOTE: the roster was updated to include three additional names added by team members).  Charlie Barker indicated that the Honduras Mission 2002 has been set for July 13-20, 2002.  Jeannie provided the devotional.

Future meetings were discussed and Greta Miller presented a summary of potential meeting topics. The potential topics are:

1.     Fashion show demonstrating the Honduras team recommended garb.

2.     A working team meeting, demonstrating the art of making construction frames for concrete floor and latrines. Mixing cement for the floors and latrines.  Beth Ann McCelland agreed to talk to her sister, Sarah, about organizing a trip to the country (Farmsville, VA) to work on a construction project that would demonstrate the construction requirements of the Honduras mission.

3.     Medical Needs Meeting.

4.     Practical key Spanish phrases.

5.     Developing a Team Song - Kerry Fradley.

6.     We will meet once in May.  This date is scheduled for May 20th.  In June and July we should have an additional 6 meetings.  All team members should try to attend these meetings, especially the last four team meetings, which will be scheduled in June and July. Remember that we leave on July 21, 2001.  We talked about having meetings during Sunday School, but we were concerned about the potential conflict with Sunday School classes.  Charlie Barker said that he would talk to Philip Spiess about the Honduras Team holding meetings on Sunday mornings during Sunday School.

Summaries of Honduras Group Projects were provided as follows:

a.     Hygiene Kits - Mary Ellen Davis

Mary Ellen could not attend the meeting, but she sent her report via an email: "I have the hygiene kits and flip-flops on the schedule for the youth to put together (hygiene kits) and donate (flip flops). This is scheduled for the May 20th youth meeting. Service and Mission will front the money for the hygiene kits and we will ask members of the congregation to 'sponsor' kits. Any that are not sponsored will be covered by Service and Mission."

b.     Children to Children Drawings - Greta & Joe Miller

Greta presented projects that were provided by the Sunday School class. These included drawings and cards that were colorfully decorated with Spanish words and sayings.  More of these will be collected next month.

c.     Sewing Kits/Fabric - Conoly Barker

Conoly talked to Carmen at HOI concerning sewing kits and fabric.  They said that the villagers could not come to the ranch for instructions, but ranch personnel could go to the village.  Conoly said that we could ask the congregation for donations of fabric and sewing kits.

d.     School Supplies - Charlie Barker

Charlie is waiting to hear back from Meg Lewis of HOI concerning needs of the school.

e.     Bubbles and Fixin's - Topher Generazio

Topher was working on getting the supplies together.

f.     Glasses/Spectacles - Greta & Joe Miller

Greta provided a report that she asked the congregation to supply glasses through donations.  A request was made that morning and a collection box was placed in the Northex of the church.  Kerry Fradley indicated that she had a Lions Club friend that may have access to some of the unused glasses that the Lions Club collects.  Kerry said she would talk to them and get back to us. Charlie indicated that he would talk to HOI about specific needs for eyeglasses.

g.     School Necessities - Charlie Barker

The school could always use toothbrushes and tooth paste.  We need to decide if we want to bring the toothbrushes & tooth paste or buy them in Honduras.  We also need to look for books in Spanish.

h.     Shoes/Flip Flops for Villagers - Mary Ellen Davis

See a) above.

i.     La Fiesta at El Quebrachal - Jerry & Jeannie Patee

Jeannie brought a kite and suggested several other items such as jump ropes, snacks, popcorn, cookies, wiffle ball, Frisbees and a piņata.  The piņata could be purchased in Honduras.

j.     Home Care Packets - Beth Ann McClelland

Beth Ann discussed the possible contents of the Home Care Kits.  A suggestion was made by Bob McClelland to ask the congregation for donations. Home Care Packets could potentially consist of a mirror, comb, toothbrush, fabric, duck tape, scissors, rubber gloves, large safety pins, candles, etc. Beth Ann agreed to make a poster of suggested home care kit items.  She said that the poster would also ask the congregation for donations.  Beth Ann and Bob McClelland will put the appropriate announcement in the church bulletin.

k.     Suitcase Alternatives - Charlie Barker

Charlie Barker indicated that he had found a carrying case to be used on the trip.  It was decided to consider getting 5 bags with rollers. Charlie agreed to buy one of the carrying bags that he has been looking at.  He will bring it to the next meeting so we could look it over.

Two new team members were nominated and added to the roster.  Beth Ann nominated a friend named Ralph and Jeannie nominated her niece, Randi.  The Honduras Team 2001 accepted their nominations.  There are currently 19 on the team roster and we have set a limit of 20.
